Missing female hiker

I was just listening to CNN this morning about a missing female hike in Georgia. She has been missing since New Year's Day. She was hiking a mountain trail alone with her dog.

I have to weigh in on this one because I simply don't understand why as women we continue to put ourselves in situations that open us up for attack and murder. Hiking a mountain trail alone? Are we not acutely aware of news stories that replay similar situations over and over again? How many more incidents have to happen before we have the common sense to say to ourselves....gee.....I should take someone with me or go in a group?

I am not going to belabor this in a huge post today but I just stand in amazement every time I hear another "missing woman" story on the news. Are we really that stupid?

You don't even know what has happened here yet and you are already passing judgment on a missing female hiker.

My opinion on the matter is, there are bad people in this world. You can choose to live in fear and lock yourself up in your house, or you can get out and see the world.

she did have her dog with her after all which may have giver her a perceived level of comfort in going it alone.

I can wholeheartedly agree that no one should be locked in a closet in fear for their life. Everyone should be able to live freely and enjoy life.

In this day and age, however, women have to be aware of where they are and what places them in a position of being vulnerable or at risk. I do not walk the downtown streets at night alone nor do I hike in the woods alone. There are certain situations - no matter how familiar - that should keep you on your guard. Or at the very least aware!

Unfortunately, these are the times in which we live. Hopefully this woman will be found safe and sound.

I blame my cynicism on too many episodes of Nancy Grace......

It's not a matter of judgment of the hiker - it's a matter of education that we, as women, have the power to protect ourselves. Being oblivious to dangers..both new and old..because we have a RIGHT to do it is just plain stupid.

ya know how some stories just stick with ya... this one did me. I kept thinking about it all day long. Having had a "stalker-friend" recently.. I had to become hyper aware of what was going on around me all of the time... it's not fun.

Now...every once in awhile I stop myself and realize that maybe i'm getting too relaxed again.

It's a fine line... sometimes a dangerously fine line.

unfortunately... it just is

All I have to say is "Get a gun". Our Hamilton County Prosecutor said a couple of weeks ago that he would never seek to press charges against a homeowner or a business owner who defended themselves against an armed robber. "If you rob someone and you are armed, then prepare to get shot" were his words or pretty close to that. To me, this is the same thing. If I were someone who wanted to hike alone, I absolutely would have a gun and I pity the fool who would try to F _ _ K with me.

Well that just about sums it up. Wouldn't the NRA would be proud....
